What makes a great pocket knife, or hunting knife? Quality of steel is a big point when questioning the quality of a knife. This depends on the how it was heat treated and the composition of the steel/alloy. Usually blades are labeled with the particular alloy they are made of. What is the best alloy for a knife? That is a trick question as it all depends on what you are using it for. Whether it be a general purpose pocket knife or a knife for hunting, the quality of a blade can be put into a few catagories.
First of all, wear resistance, it's ability to withstand wear. This is determined by the amount, type and distribution of carbides in the steel. Next, strength, is determined by its hardness, basically, the harder the steel the stronger it is. A stronger blade will resist bending and deforming under tough tasks more easily. Toughness of a blade is judged by its ability to contact a harder object and not chip or crack. Typically you will have to trade-off toughness for hardness and strength and visa-versa. Finally, we have edge holding. Obviously having a sharp blade on your favorite pocket knife is nice but we want it to stay that way too. This is too tricky to really get into but it has everything to do with all the other attributes of the blade. Each combination of the other three attributes creates a different knife for a different purpose.
